Your next step towards work in Germany

Start with a clear goal, prepare your application, and build a routine you can keep. These short guides help you organize the next step.

1. Make your job search practical

Choose two or three job titles that fit your experience. Search for their German names as well as the names you already know. Look at employers’ own career pages, the Federal Employment Agency and relevant job boards. Read each advert before applying: location, tasks, language, hours and qualifications should fit your situation.

  • Keep a simple list: employer, role, application date and next action.
  • Set aside regular time to search and send tailored applications.
  • Check any work conditions on your residence documents and whether your profession needs qualification recognition.

2. Prepare your CV and cover letter

Use a clear CV with consistent dates. Start with recent experience and describe what you did in concrete terms. Include education, useful skills and an honest description of your languages. A cover letter should explain your interest in this specific job and show a relevant example of your work. Follow the employer’s instructions about documents and file formats.

  • Check your phone number and email address carefully.
  • Use a professional file name and proofread the final document.
  • Keep a version of your CV that you can update for each application.

3. Prepare for interviews and Ausbildung

Practice a short introduction: who you are, what experience you bring, and why this role interests you. Prepare examples of solving a problem or learning a skill. For Ausbildung, read the training description and learn what the daily work involves. Prepare your own questions about the team, learning support and next steps.

  • Check the location or video-call link in advance.
  • Bring or prepare the documents requested in the invitation.
  • Afterwards, note what went well and what you want to practice.
