Understand the next step in everyday life

Letters, appointments and unfamiliar offices can feel complicated. Start by identifying who contacted you, what they need and what you should clarify next.

Read an official letter in four steps

First find the sender and the reference number. Then identify the purpose: is this an appointment, a request for documents or a decision? Mark any date or deadline, and list what is requested. Keep the letter and a copy of your response together. If something is unclear, ask the sending office or a qualified advice service for help before the deadline.

  • Look for: Termin, Frist, Unterlagen and Aktenzeichen.
  • Write down the specific question you need answered.
  • Use the official contact channel; avoid sharing personal documents in public comments.

Jobcenter and Agentur für Arbeit

These are different offices. The Agentur für Arbeit supports employment matters and administers unemployment insurance benefits. Jobcenters handle means-tested basic support and related employment assistance. Which office is responsible depends on your situation. Read the name on your letter and use the reference number when asking a question; do not assume that one office automatically receives what you sent to another.

  • Prepare your questions and the documents requested for an appointment.
  • Keep a note of the date, contact person and agreed next step.
  • Ask the office directly about requirements that apply to your case.

Residence documents and BAMF

Keep your passport, residence documents and important correspondence organized. Check expiry dates and the instructions from the responsible authority. The local Ausländerbehörde handles residence matters, while BAMF has responsibilities in asylum, migration and integration, including integration courses. Requirements vary by residence title and personal situation; a general checklist cannot determine your individual entitlement.

  • Use the official website of your local authority for current appointment and document instructions.
  • Prepare questions early when your situation changes.
  • For a decision about your rights, get individual advice from a qualified service.
